WHAT we strive for in care

KIOCH, founded in 2017,  is a registered not-for-profit organization building a multi-specialty children’s hospital for cardiology, oncology and mental health, working towards constructing a comprehensive paediatric care facility in Nepal. Based on a hub-and-spoke model, the headquarter will be based in the Budhanilkantha Municipality, Kathmandu, with six satellite units to be established in rural provinces in the future. Through these efforts, we aim to provide access to healthcare for thousands of Nepali children.

Provide timely, accessible and quality health care to all children of Nepal, irrespective of their economic status.

OUR VISION

We envision a Nepal where all children have access to health care of the highest standard in the field of cardiology, oncology and mental health, from village level health posts to regional hospitals, to a central hospital in Kathmandu. Each facility has excellent doctors and well trained nurses providing the best care and education on hygiene, immunization and nutritious diets working closely with partners in different sectors, such as the Government, NGOs, the private sector, knowledge centers and other medical institutions in and outside of Nepal to ultimately deliver comprehensive healthcare for all children.

We will start building KIOCH,  a high quality children’s hospital in the following areas of clinical paediatrics: oncology, cardiology and mental health.

Cardiology 

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is the most commonly acquired heart disease among children in Nepal. RHD is a chronic heart condition caused by acute rheumatic fever which can be prevented with proper treatment of throat/ear infections. RHD is among the top three reasons for admission into the cardiology department and second most common cause of cardiac surgery.

Oncology 

Every year, approximately 1-1.5 per 10,000 children develop cancer. There has been a reported increasing trend since 1994, from 20 cases per year to 110 cases in 2012. Records from Kanti Children’s Hospital show that the current cure rate for cancer is around 40%, with 35% abandonment of therapy due to financial burden, and 25% mortality.

Mental Health 

In Nepal, the estimated suicide rate for people aged 15-29 years in 2012 was 25.8 per 100,000. Among students aged 13-17 years, 10% attempted suicide one or more times, 14% made a plan about how they would attempt suicide, and 13.7% seriously considered suicide. It should be noted that the problem may be significantly underestimated due to stigma, social taboos, and systems for reporting suicide.

Our goals for providing this healthcare are to:

Establish a multi-specialty children’s hospital in Kathmandu;

 

Provide preventive interventions through government health programs

 

Create a care network throughout Nepal;

 

Conduct research studies to inform continuous performance improvement activities

 

Set up a resource center for shared-learning and provide training to health workers

 

In addition to the above mentioned products and services, KIOCH aims to train and upskill healthcare professionals in Kathmandu.
This will greatly benefit the region in providing much needed training as skilled resources in the healthcare sector are in short supply in Nepal.

 

 

We will position ourselves as the hub in our care network for the above focus areas. In order to develop these focus areas and take on a leading role, we will only allow patients in need of the specialized care KIOCH provides.

 

 

 

KIOCH will therefore be a referral hospital: patients will only be treated at KIOCH if they are referred by other care providers. The only exception is  life-threatening situations where referral to other institutions would endanger a patient’s life.

Phase I:

  • Develop 6 satellite units, strategically located in each of the other provinces in Nepal. Each satellite unit will have   up to 50 bed capacity.
  • Develop a centrally located research unit to pursue evidence based research.
